Turkish Get-Up

The Turkish get-up is the most complete single exercise in fitness. Getting from lying on the floor to standing while holding a weight overhead requires strength, stability, mobility, and coordination from every joint in your body. It's been used for centuries by wrestlers, martial artists, and strongmen. One rep takes 30-45 seconds. Five reps per side is a serious workout.

How to Do Turkish Get-Up: Step by Step

  1. Lie on your back holding a kettlebell in one hand, arm locked out overhead
  2. Bend the knee on the same side as the kettlebell, foot flat on the floor
  3. Roll to your opposite elbow, then to your hand, keeping the weight up
  4. Bridge your hips up and sweep your straight leg underneath you to a kneeling position
  5. Stand up from the lunge position, weight still locked out overhead

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Taking your eyes off the weight — always watch the kettlebell
  • Rushing through the steps — each position is a checkpoint, not a speed drill
  • Starting too heavy — learn the movement with no weight, then a shoe balanced on your fist
